This novel centers on the painter Vermeer's prosperous Delft household during the 1660s. When Griet is hired as a servant, turmoil follows. First the 16 year old Griet becomes closer to her master and then she is used as his assistant and then as his model. There are complex domestic tensions in the household between Vermeer, his wife, mother-in-law, and Griet.
