Shortly after the integration of public schools, Kizzy Ann Stamps is apprehensive about starting at a new school, worried she will not make any new friends, or that kids will make fun of her for her scar. While worrying about starting school, Kizzy Ann is also worried that she will not be able to enter a herding competition due to the color of her skin.
