Fourteen-year-old Hanna, half-Chinese, settled with her father in the frontier town of LaForge in Dakota Territory in 1880. She hopes to attend school before becoming a dressmaker in her father's dry goods shop. Still, first, she must deal with racism from the local townspeople, grief from the loss of her mother, and a yearning to belong as she and her father struggle to find a place where they will be accepted.
