Eleven-year-old Ada and her brother move in with their new guardian, Lady Thorton, and her daughter. As the fallout from World War II comes closer, Ruth, a young Jewish girl from Germany, also moves in, which further causes consternation in Ada as she struggles with issues of identity, family, and trust.
