Oskar Schindler was an unlikely candidate for becoming a hero to the Jews during WWII. First of all, he was a member of the Nazi party and even spied for them in Poland. He was also a hard-drinking partier, gambler and womanizer. However, when Oskar became convinced that Hitler's plans to eliminate the Jews were wrong, he set up a factory to employ as many Jews as possible. This would make the Nazis think they were essential for the war effort, and would protect them from deportation to concentration camps and certain death. Oskar's efforts resulted in saving the lives of over 1,000 Jews. Herein is the amazing story of an unlikely hero, Oskar Schindler. By examining his life before, during and after the war, we can remember that heroes are never perfect; they just have to care enough to bring all their resources to bear in resisting hate.
