When the German army occupied Poland in 1939, Esther Fleischman ended up in the over-crowded Warsaw Ghetto with her mother, father, and nine brothers and sisters. Because she was small for her age, ten-year-old Esther was able to escape from time to time through a hole in the wall of the ghetto to search for food. One day, when Esther returned from one of her trips to find food, she discovered that everyone, including her entire family, had been taken from ghetto to Nazi concentration camp. Against all odds, she survived many frightening and horrific experiences by hiding her Jewish identity. She and her sister were the only family members who survived the Holocaust. Young author/illustrator Molly Meyer does an amazing job telling Esther's story.
