Curt Lowens was born in East Prussia, and his life was in danger during World War II because his family was Jewish. Instead of going to the concentration camp, Curt was lucky to disappear. He was accepted to work with the Dutch Underground to help move Jewish children into Christian homes where they might be safer. He changed his name to "Ben" in order to do this kind of work during the war. After the war, Curt immigrated to America and decided to become and actor. His first job was on Broadway, where he played, of all things, a Nazi soldier. Young author Ava Goodson and young illustrator Katy Leigh Babcock did a wonderful job bringing Curt's true story to life for young readers.
