Al Cartmill was born in Iowa in 1930. He loved playing baseball. His high school coach wrote to the Kansas City Monarchs to tell them about Al's talent, which is how Al became part of the Negro National League. As the team was traveling to play games, they dealt with issues of segregation. They couldn't go to the bathroom, drink water, or ride the same bus as white people. Al joined the Air Force in 1950 and then played for the Pittsburgh Pirates. This story of courage and persistence is told by Alexis Mulvehill.
