Young David Wolnerman lived in a small village in Poland when the Nazis invaded. When he was taken to Auschwitz concentration camp, he lied about his age saying he was 18. If he had admitted to being younger, he would have went immediately to the gas chamber. Like the other Jewish prisoners, he received a tattoo on his arm with a number assigned. Later in life, he realized the numbers on his arm add up to 18 which is a special number meaning "life" in Judaism. We've all been taught that lying is not good, but in this case it saved David's life. Young author Sydney Pearl and artist Dani Lipman did a fabulous job telling David's Story for young readers. Interest Level: AD.
