Rigoberta Menchu grew up in a tiny Mayan village in the mountains of Guatemala. Then wealthy landowners tried to steal the villagers' land, and Guatemalan soldiers repeatedly attacked Rigoberta's village, brutally killing members of Rigoberta's family. Rigoberta efforts to risk her life and tell her family's story and to teach other Indians how to protect themselves helped her win the Nobel Peace Prize in 1992. Her fight for justice continues today among Mayan and native people in Guatemala.
