In the 1930s, the children of Maui's sugar cane workers spend their days swimming in irrigation ditches. When a science teacher named Soichi Sakamoto offers to take responsibility for the children, he forms a swim club and helps train the children using his science knowledge. Soon, the children become talented swimmers, and they begin dominating at swim meets. Sakamoto and his team eventually make it to the Olympics and win multiple medals.
