The Hueys are a community of small, oval-shaped, identical creatures who look exactly the same, think the same thoughts, and do the exact same things. Their absolute conformity is thrown into chaos when a Huey named Rupert decides to do something unprecedented: he knits and wears a bright orange sweater. While the other Hueys initially react with shock and horror at his individuality, a Huey named Gillespie decides that standing out looks interesting and knits an identical orange sweater to match. Soon, individuality becomes a massive trend—every single Huey knits an identical sweater until they are all completely uniform once again. The story ends with Rupert looking for a new way to express his individuality, this time introducing a hat.
