Twelve-year-old Alice Winston works to keep her family's ranch after her sister runs away to get married. She helps her father on the ranch as the bills pile up and her mother is confined to bed with depression. The Winstons take on horses from some of their wealthier neighbors to make some extra money, and Alice envies the privileges wealth provides.
